Before we dive in, allow me to explain what a Registered Dietitian (or RD for short) is in the first place, and why they should be your trusted expert when it comes to nutrition and food.
The RD title is hard-earned. Dietitians have completed rigorous academic programs that include a Bachelor's of Science degree in Nutrition, followed by a 1 year supervised internship that includes hands-on experience in various settings such as hospitals and clinics. Next, they need to pass a national examination and then continue to complete continuing education every year. Dietitians are regulated health professionals which means we are held accountable by the College of Dietitians of Alberta to ensure we are providing safe, evidence-based, and ethical care to our patients- a guarantee you don't get with the nutrition advice from your well-intentioned friend who promises they are "practically a nutrition expert"!
Now, you might be thinking, "Why should I hire a dietitian when I can find plenty of free nutrition information online?" Well, let's take a look!
Here's 5 reasons why hiring a dietitian is worthwhile:
Personalized nutrition plan: I will take into account your medical history, lifestyle, and food preferences to create a personalized nutrition plan that suits your needs and goals. No cookie cutter approaches here!
Support: I will be your support system, providing motivation, compassion and encouragement to help you achieve your goals.
Professional expertise: I will provide you with the most up-to-date information on nutrition, helping you separate fact from fiction and guiding you toward evidence-based choices. The internet can be an overwhelming place and sorting through the misinformation is hard to do on your own.
Disease management: If you have a chronic condition such as diabetes, heart disease, or gastrointestinal disorders, I can develop a nutrition plan that can help manage your condition and improve your overall health.
Balanced approach: My approach as a non-diet dietitian is that "all foods fit". I became a dietitian because I love food and I want you to enjoy it too! The last thing I want is for my clients to feel stress or guilt around eating, so any changes we make will be sustainable and at a pace that feels just right for you.
Investing in my services as a registered dietitian means investing in your health, well-being, and future. So, if you're ready to take the first step towards achieving your goals, contact me today!
